Plastic Surgery Camp October 2010 (Nigeria)

Due to the aid of the Dutch Embassy the new sterilisation devices have arrived. The Interplast team immediately made good use of it!

Report by Cees Spronk

The team consists of:
Cees Spronk, leader of the team and plastic surgeon
Jan Jaap van der Biezen, plastic surgeon
Maarten Schulein, anaesthesiologist
Jan Eenling, assistant anaesthetist
Anneke Visser, operation assistant

In October a relatively small team went to Mangu to work there for the second time this year. In total 200 patients were seen and 75 operations were done. Again the number of patients with contractures by burns was enormous: we did 40 of such operations. As in many African countries also in Nigeria there is hardly any care for patients with burns due to a lack of knowledge and the proper means. During the next surgery camps education and local schooling will be more prominent.

We operated upon many patients with burns, six children with schisms, we did seven urogenital reconstructions and we operated upon 22 patients with other diseases. Due to the aid of the Dutch Embassy the new sterilisation devices have arrived. The Interplast team immediately made good use of it!

THE NEW PAVILLION.

After these two successful weeks the team left again without Cees en Neeltje Spronk. They stayed somewhat longer to monitor the building of the new pavilion and to visit the new Dutch Ambassador in Nigeria, Bert Ronhaar (former Ambassador in Yemen where he learnt about Interplast).
